National Schools Constitutional Convention

Important update on the 29th National Schools Constitutional Convention (NSCC)

On behalf of the National Schools Constitutional Convention (NSCC), we regret to inform Victorian students that the usual procedures for selecting and approving Victorian students were unfortunately not available this year. As a result, Victorian students will be unable to participate in the 19-21 March 2024 NSCC event in Canberra.

Arrangements to support Victorian students to participate in the 2025 NSCC are being worked through.

We thank all Victorian students who expressed an interest in the 2024 NSCC event and wish them well in their studies.

Date: Tuesday 19 - Thursday 21 March 2024 (Travel day: 18 March)
Location: Canberra

The National Schools Constitutional Convention (NSCC) is one of the major components of the Australian Government Civics and Citizenship Education (CCE) program.  The NSCC is an annual peak event exploring the Australian Constitution for senior school students in Years 11 and 12.  A total of 120 students will be selected nation-wide each year to attend.

The program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education (DOE), coordinated by National Curriculum Services (NCS) and supported by the Department of Education from all states and territories. The Australian Curriculum Studies Association (ACSA) assists with the development of the program. Costs associated with flights, accommodation and catering are covered by DOE.  The supervision of students will be coordinated by National Curriculum Services and supported by the Department of Education from all states and territories.  All accompanying supervisors are registered teachers and/or possess valid working with children checks (or equivalent).

The 29th National Schools Constitutional Convention (NSCC) was held on Tuesday 19 – Thursday 21 March 2024 in Canberra (with Monday 18 March being a travel day).

The topic of the Convention was, “Section 96 of the Constitution allows the Commonwealth to grant funds to areas that fall outside those prescribed in Section 51. Should Section 96 be amended to decentralise the power of the Commonwealth?”
