Another successful 2019 National Schools Constitutional Convention

Approximately 120 senior student delegates who debated the topic ‘A new constitutional preamble for Australia?’ at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House in Canberra as part of the 24th National Schools Constitutional Convention. Emeritus Professor John Warhurst AO from the Australian National University facilitated this Convention, held from 19-21 March 2019.

After considering input from experts, student groups prepared draft preambles which were modified to present to the group and voted on in a mock referendum conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission.

The outcome was incorporated into a Communiqué (uploaded below) and will be presented to the Senate for inclusion in Hansard, which will be tabled in Parliament.

This Convention is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training as part of its ongoing commitment to civics and citizenship education.
